Children's Burns Service
The South West UK Paediatric (Childrens) Burn Service is based
at Frenchay Hospital, part of North Bristol NHS Trust, and treats
around 600 children with burn injuries every year.
Our aim is to provide the highest quality care for all children
referred with burns, scalds and other skin loss conditions
including:
- Staphylococcal Scalded Skin Syndrome
- Toxic Epidermolysis Necrosis
- Plastic surgery care required following meningococcal
septicaemia.
We are the lead paediatric (Childrens) burn service for the
South West UK Burns Network and as such will also accept referral
of complex paediatric (Childrens) burns from the Central South
Coast and South Wales as well as from the South West.
We provide the highest quality, equitable, child/family friendly
burn care for all children and their families within our catchment
area, to achieve the best possible outcomes following burn injury
within the South West Regional Burn Care Network.
The service is based within a separate burns area on the Barbara
Russell Children's Ward (Specialist Surgical Paediatric (Childrens)
Unit) at Frenchay Hospital.
We have access to ward and rehabilitation paediatric burn beds,
formal paediatric burn high-dependency beds, beds for short term
ventilation (PACU) as well as access to the Regional PICU service
at the Bristol Children’s Hospital.
We have a burns assessment unit for children that has direct
access from ambulances and is 20 yards from the on-site helicopter
pad (which is suitable for all helicopters).
We have 4 burn surgeons who work with children as well as 6
paediatric anaesthetists. There is also 24 hours 7 days a week
cover from paediatric SHO's and registrars.
All nursing staff are RSCN trained and include a paediatric
burns specialist nurse and a three-strong outreach nursing
team.
A general consultant paediatric ward round occurs every day and
there is access to a comprehensive child protection team. We also
have strong scar management, occupational therapy and physiotherapy
services.
We provide a comprehensive and responsive service to those
children and families who use our service.
