Cleft Lip & Palate Service
South West
The North Bristol NHS Trust Cleft Lip and Palate Team, at
Frenchay Hospital, look after children born with a cleft lip and/or
cleft palate for most of the South West of England. It is part of
the South Wales South West Managed Clinical Network.
As well as providing all care for the children in the Bristol
area, the team works with colleagues in hospitals in Bath, Exeter,
Gloucester, Plymouth, Taunton, Torbay and Truro. All children born
with a cleft in these areas will have the primary surgical repair
of the cleft carried out in Bristol.
A cleft of the lip can be on one side (unilateral) or both
sides (bilateral).
Children whose cleft does not affect the palate generally have
no cleft-related speech problems.
Many children with a cleft lip have no problems or concerns
psychologically.
Children with a cleft lip and/or palate seem to get tooth decay
more easily than other children.
To support you in establishing a good feeding regime that gives
your baby what he or she needs and is acceptable to the
family.
There has been a general move to adopt a simple system for
classifying clefts, which is easy to use.
