Maternity Performance Mother, father and baby

In 2009 our normal birth rate was 60%, 13.5% of women had an instrumental birth and 26.4% a caesarean birth.
3.1% of births took place at home, and 9.1% on the Birth Suite.

The overall rates for England were 12.2% instrumental birth and 24.6% caesarean birth in 2008-2009 (most recent figures available - NHS Information Centre). The overall homebirth rate in England for 2008 was 2.8% (Office for National Statistics).

We continue to work towards increasing our normal birth rate and our home birth rate and were selected as an early adopter site to work with the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement to achieve this.

Our maternity services were rated as ‘better performing’ in a review of maternity services across the country (Healthcare Commission 2008). In January 2010 we achieved Clinical Negligence Scheme for Trusts (CNST) level 2, which means safe practices are in place, and we are working towards level 3.

Our unit has won awards for emergency and teamwork training and has been fully Baby Friendly accredited since 2004.
