Neuropsychology
The department of neuropsychology is a
regional specialist centre for neurosciences, including neurology,
neurosurgery and neuropsychiatry.
Neuropsychology is the branch of psychology
that addresses the link between brain and behaviour.
Neuropsychological assessments are an objective way of quantifying
and characterising the cognitive, behavioural and emotional effects
of the changes in brain function that can occur after damage, or
with disease, affecting the brain. In addition to assessment,
neuropsychologists are in an excellent position to educate and
advise patients, and their families, in order to help them
understand and adapt to the changes that can result from brain
damage. Neuropsychologists are also involved with formal
rehabilitation of individuals that have suffered brain damage, for
example after a traumatic brain injury. In addition
neuropsychologists are often involved in researching how changes in
the brain affect behaviour.
The department of neuropsychology is based in
the Burden Centre at Frenchay Hospital, though clinicians within
the department are located throughout the hospital, close to the
services they supply.
As well as having strong links with clinical
colleagues within these disciplines the department of
neuropsychology also has close links with the Department of Experimental
Psychology and the Department of Medicine at the University of
Bristol.
Neuropsychology offer services across a full
