Neurosurgery
The North Bristol NHS Trust Neurosurgery Department is located
at Frenchay Hospital. It is a tertiary referral unit serving the
counties of Gloucestershire, Somerset and Wiltshire in addition to
the city of Bristol.
The paediatric Neurosurgery Department serves the entire
southwest peninsula including the counties of Devon and
Cornwall.
Over 2600 emergency and elective neurosurgical procedures are
performed each year.
Emergency referrals are dealt with by an ‘on call’ team
consisting of 2 Consultant Neurosurgeons, a Specialist Registrar
(who is the first line of contact) and a Senior House Officer grade
doctor providing ward cover. 1 of the on call consultants is
dedicated entirely to paediatric referrals.
The department consists of 2 male and 2 female adult
neurosurgical wards with a total of 67 beds, 12 of which comprise
the Neuro High Dependency Unit.
The Barbara Russell Children’s Ward has 34 paediatric beds in
addition to 4 Paediatric High Dependency beds.
4 Neurosurgical theatres are run daily with 1 dedicated to
emergency procedures.
The department is located in close proximity to the Emergency
Department, 2 Intensive Care Units and the Neuroradiology
department with access 2 CT scanners, 2 angiogram suites and 2 MRI
scanners with a third new state-of-the-art 3 Tesla MRI scanner soon
to be commissioned.
