Major Trauma Centre
North Bristol NHS Trust has now been
designated as one of the 2 Major Trauma Centre’s in the South
West, servicing the Severn region. The Major Trauma Centre
will help increase chances of survival and recovery for
seriously ill patients. The Major Trauma Centre will also be
supported by six acute trusts that have been designated as trauma
units including: Gloucester Royal Hospital, Great Western Hospital,
Swindon, Musgrove Park hospital, Taunton, Royal United Hospitals,
Bath University Hospitals Bristol and Yeovil Hospital
What is major trauma?
Major Trauma is multiple, life threatening or
life changing serious physical injuries.
These might include injuries such as:
- Major head injury
- Severe knife or gunshot wounds
- Spinal injury
- Amputation
What is a Major Trauma
Centre?
A Major Trauma Centre is a specialty hospital
providing trauma care services. It manages all types of injuries,
providing consultant-level care 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
The major trauma centre takes responsibility
for the care of all patients with major trauma in the area covered
by the network. The network includes:
- Bristol
- Bath
- Gloucester and Cheltenham
- Swindon
- Taunton
- Yeovil
- Weston-Super-Mare
Frenchay hospital is equipped with a helipad
and a major specialty for neurosurgery, burns and plastics
patients. Becoming a Major Trauma Centre will ensure that patients
who are admitted have access to specialist equipment and a full
range of trauma specialists, including orthopaedics, neurosurgery
and radiology teams. This will help improve patient’s chances
of survival and help them recover faster. It is estimated that
survival rates are increased by up to 20%.
