Male consultant looking at screen North Bristol NHS Trust’s Neurosciences Department, based at Frenchay Hospital, is the regional centre for neurological services for the South West of England and contains a medical, nursing, radiology, pathology, psychiatry and therapist team that purely specialises in neurological conditions.

The department's excellent national and international reputation means we receive patient referrals, not just from across the South West, but also from across the UK and indeed the world.

Since the 1940s, the Neurosciences department, based at Frenchay Hospital, has consistently been at the forefront of technical advances in neurology and neurosurgery, including the development of world’s first minimal invasive surgery techniques.

Using the very latest cutting edge techniques the Neurosciences team treat a wide range of conditions, such as pioneering the use of deep brain stimulation for the treatment of functional disorders  such as Parkinson’s disease (led by Professor Steven Gill) and epilepsy and we’re developing the use of robotic surgery to deliver drugs straight into the brain with pinpoint accuracy.

There are strong links with the University of Bristol with the team leading ground-breaking research into the treatment of conditions including multiple sclerosis (led by Professor Neil Scolding) and dementia and the wider use of deep brain stimulation in the field of pain management and depression (led by Mr Nik Patel).

The team includes 13 consultants, who are world-leading experts in their specialities, carrying out more than 3,500 individual procedures each year, of which 50% are emergency admissions.

In 2014, the award-winning adult neurosciences service will transfer to the new re-developed hospital based at Southmead, in Bristol, ensuring the reputation and legacy of Neurosciences at Frenchay Hospital continues and develops into the 21st century.

The team currently includes a dedicated paediatric neurosciences service, which treats children and young people, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with a wide range of conditions from across the South West from the purpose-built Barbara Russell Children’s Unit, based in Frenchay Hospital. This service will move in 2014 to the Bristol Children’s Hospital, as part of long-term plans to centralise all children’s inpatient services in one location.
