Bristol Breast Care Centre Appeal to benefit from Fashion Week

Friday, 7 February 2014

A fundraising appeal to create a breast care centre for the whole of Bristol is set to benefit from the city’s forthcoming fashion week.

The £500,000 Bristol Breast Care Centre Appeal is being supported by Bristol Fashion Week which is returning to The Mall at Cribbs Causeway in March.

The new centre, which is planned to open in the summer, will bring all breast care services for the wider Bristol area together under one roof.

Anyone in Bristol, South Gloucestershire and parts of Bath and North East Somerset who is referred by their GP with symptoms of breast cancer, or has had an abnormal mammogram will be seen in the centre.  Surgeons, radiologists and radiographers will all be based in the centre, run by North Bristol NHS Trust, which will enable patients to have all the tests they need in one visit rather than having to return.

The historic Beaufort House on the Southmead Hospital is currently being transformed to create the centre, which is being tailored to the needs of patients. There will be private rooms for complimentary therapies and treatments, dedicated meeting rooms for wellbeing and advice programmes, secret garden courtyard areas for patients who need time for quiet contemplation.

Dr Mike Shere, lead breast care clinician specialist at North Bristol NHS Trust, said: “We feel that this will have huge benefits for the women and men of Bristol.”
He added: “There will be a lot of advantages to having all the breast services under one wonderful new roof.”

Bristol Fashion Week features five days of fashion with 18 catwalk shows hosted by television stylist Mark Heyes and celebrity hairdresser Andrew Barton.

Maria Crayton, head of marketing at The Mall Cribbs Causeway, said: "We hope that our support will help to raise awareness of the appeal and support the fundraising efforts.
“Hopefully everyone buying tickets to Bristol Fashion Week online will add a donation to the charity!"

Head of fundraising at North Bristol NHS Trust, Jane Ibbunson, said: “We are delighted that the Mall has chosen to support the new Bristol Breast Care Centre at Southmead Hospital.
“Every year approximately 30,000 people in the Bristol area, will either be referred or screened the centre, having a dedicated facility that is bringing all breast care services together will make an amazing difference.”

The Spring/ Summer 2014 Bristol Fashion Week is being held from Wednesday March 26 until Sunday, March 30.
