Tuesday, 4 December 2012
£50,000 of charity donations is being shared by wards and departments at Southmead and Frenchay Hospitals and across NHS Community teams in Bristol and South Gloucestershire in an advent countdown to Christmas.
Shine together - the charity supporting Frenchay and Southmead Hospitals and community health services - is distributing the money raised and has created a Christmas Cracker advent calendar, which will announce daily which wards and departments have won a share of the money between now and Christmas.
The funds have been collected from donations made by members of the public, local groups and companies throughout the year.
Departments were asked to apply for a share by outlining how their patients could benefit from the funding for new equipment and a judging panel made up of clinicians and patient representatives decided which bids were successful.
Two awards were announced to start off the Christmas Cracker campaign this weel.
The first award was for £2,400 donated to Specialisr Services for Children with Learning Disabilities ar Southmead Hospital to purchase a range of sensory equipment for young patients at Southmead Hospital.
The equipment will help the children by promoting concentration, focus, participation and interaction. It also significantly improves connection to other people and the outside world.
Another £2,300 has been awarded to Southmead Hospital's anaesthetics team to buy a portable hand held spirometer which will benefit patients by improving their assessment in cases where lung disease is suspected.
You can find out how a further £45,000 will be distributed to wards and departments at Southmead Hospital, Frenchay Hospital and community teams every week day up until Christmas by opening each door on the Shine together advent calendar.
Trevor Reid, Head of Fundraising for the Shine Together Charity said: “Thanks to the incredible generosity of people across Bristol we are delighted to be distributing over £50,000 to wards and departments at Southmead and Frenchay Hospitals this Christmas.
“The money is being used to buy new equipment and improve services for patients. Our Christmas Cracker campaign is a lovely boost for the festive season and we would like to say thank you to everyone who has supported us throughout 2012.
