Departments share in £50,000 charity funding

Friday, 21 December 2012

£50,000 of charity donations has been shared by wards and departments at Southmead and Frenchay Hospitals and across NHS community teams in Bristol and South Gloucestershire in an advent countdown to Christmas.

Shine together - the charity supporting Frenchay and Southmead Hospitals and community health services - has been distributing money raised through donations this year on their Christmas Cracker advent calendar.

The calendar announced daily which wards and departments won a share of the money throughout December. Each day's winner was then featured on BBC Radio Bristol.

The money has been raised by donations from local companies and people taking part in fundriasing activities throughout the year.

Departments were asked to apply for a share by outlining how their patients could benefit from the funding for new equipment and a judging panel made up of clinicians and patient representatives decided which bids were successful.

This year 27 wards and departments across North Bristol NHS Trust were successful in their bids for funding.

The countdown culminated in a bumper announcement of £14,000 of funding to three services at Frenchay Hospital, Southmead Hospital and South Gloucestershire community health services.

On December 21 the final winners announced were:

  • Kingswood North Locality Community Services who received £5,000 for a bladder scanner to improve care for patients in the local community, reducing infections, and reducing the need for patients to be admitted to hospital.
  • Ward 4 Elgar House, Southmead Hospital were given £5,000 to provide a bladder scanner which will speed up care for patients and reduce the need for some patients to receive catheterisation. It will also reduce the potential of urinary tract infections.
  • Burns and Plastics service, Wards 104 and 204 at Frenchay Hospital received £4,200 to purchase specialist seating for burns patients and multi-trauma patients, helping to improve care and earlier rehabilitation.

Trevor Reid, Head of Fundraising for the Shine Together Charity said: “Thanks to the incredible generosity of people across Bristol we are delighted to be able to distribute over £50,000 to wards and departments at Southmead and Frenchay Hospitals, and to communiry health teams, this Christmas.

“The money is being used to buy new equipment and improve services for patients. Our Christmas Cracker campaign is a lovely boost for the festive season and we would like to say thank you to everyone who has supported us throughout 2012."
