Frenchay Hospital support group encouraging people to support Booby Cup Cake Week

Wednesday, 26 March 2014

A Frenchay Hospital support group is encouraging people to get baking for a good cause this week.

Keeping Abreast South West is holding Booby Cup Cake Week to raise funds for its work in supporting women who are considering or undergoing breast reconstruction.

The idea for the baking fundraiser came from the group’s chairwoman, Jacky Robertson, who found her own breast reconstruction two years after she had a mastectomy was “the cherry on top of the cake”.

Having undergone surgery Jacky helped set up the initial group which eventually became Keeping Abreast South West.

The intention is to help women make decisions about reconstruction by speaking to those who have been through it. Members of the group also show the results of their own surgery to give others a realistic idea of how reconstruction might appear. Women who do not feel comfortable attending a group are also supported on a one-to-one basis.

The group also provides women with vouchers so they can buy a new bra after their surgery.

Meetings are held at Frenchay Hospital every six weeks for women who are newly diagnosed and facing the prospect of a mastectomy, those considering reconstruction, preparing for surgery or women who have been through the operation and want to share their experiences.  The meetings will move to the new Macmillan Wellbeing Centre at Southmead Hospital after  it opens in the summer.

The Bristol group was the idea of North Bristol NHS Trust consultant breast reconstruction surgeon Sherif Wilson.

Breast reconstruction nurse practitioner at the trust, Caroline Oates said: “We are trying to help these ladies make a very difficult decision.

“When it comes to reconstruction it is the patient’s choice and in making that choice some patients feel more informed about their options by coming along to the support group.”

Jacky, who posed naked except for strategically placed cupcakes, said that women have arranged coffee mornings and other events as part of Booby Cup Cake Week and is encouraging more people to get baking.

“People say reconstruction is like the cherry on the cake and that is how Booby Cup Cake Week came about,” she said.

“We have had a really good response.”

Booby Cup Cake Week runs until March 30th. Contact lindavalerieday@gmail.com to find out more about donating proceeds from a cup cake event.
