Children born at Cossham Hospital returned to mark its fifth birthday – and theirs.

Mums and babies were invited back to Cossham to celebrate it's fifth birthday

The Kingswood hospital, run by North Bristol NHS Trust, reopened in 2013 after a £19 million refurbishment, and now provides a renal dialysis unit, X-ray and scanning department, physiotherapy and outpatient appointments.

Cossham is also home to Bristol’s first free-standing midwife-led birth centre and the reopening saw babies born at the hospital for the first time in its 110-year-old history.

Since it opened in January 2013, more than 2,080 babies have been born at the hospital’s birth centre.

The children and their parents were invited back to Cossham Hospital yesterday to join the celebrations.

One of them was Esmé of Lyde Green, who celebrated her first birthday last week.

Esmé’s mother Liz said: “As soon as we walked into Cossham Birth Centre, I didn’t want to go anywhere else. I had an amazing experience and if I have another baby I want to come here.

“You feel really cared for, and it’s relaxed. It was exactly what I wanted; before I even knew I wanted it.”

The current team at Cossham Birth Centre include 13 midwives and six maternity care assistants, nine of who are from the original team when the birth centre opened.

Birth centre manager Rebecca Franklin said: “We were thrilled to be able to celebrate the fifth anniversary of Cossham Birth Centre with some of the babies who started their lives here.

“The birth centre provides a calm, relaxed environment for women who would like a natural birth and we have received wonderful comments and feedback from mothers and their partners.”

Outpatient clinics including cardiology, rheumatology, gastroenterology, dermatology and Care of the Elderly are available at Cossham. The hospital has an average of 25,000 outpatient appointments a year.

Outpatients service manager Nicholas Evans said: “Since reopening back in January 2013, we have treated thousands of patients at Cossham Hospital for a variety of conditions.

“One of the main aims of refurbishing Cossham Hospital was to provide a modern hospital with fully accessible facilities providing quality healthcare services closer to home.”
