Construction of the external new hospital building at Southmead is complete as North Bristol NHS Trust mark two years since building work began.

Work on the interior of the building will soon begin following the completion of construction including fitting out theatres, wards and outpatient areas.

Since developer Carillion started work on the site in August 2010 the new hospital has quickly taken shape with the site’s seven cranes being visible from across Bristol.

Most of the ensuite shower and toilet rooms have been installed in the single inpatient rooms.

The new £430m hospital will be open to admit patients in Spring 2014.

  • 25% of beds in four-bed bays
  • 2,700 car parking spaces in addition to improved transport links that include bus stops at the main entrance
  • All medical services and expertise under one roof

Marie-Noelle Orzel, Chief Executive at North Bristol NHS Trust, said: “It is amazing to see the new hospital take shape before our eyes to become a beacon of modern healthcare for the future.

“With less than two years to go until the new hospital opens we are entering into an exciting period of change that will enable us to provide improved in healthcare for our patients.

“Patients will benefit from greater privacy and dignity, and have access to clinical services under one roof.

“The project is on time and on budget, and the hard work of the project team has meant that we have been able to continue to provide healthcare with the old and the new buildings side by side.”

Keith Hutton, Project Director for Carillion Building, said: “Work has been progressing well on the new hospital which has provided jobs for hundreds of workers and contractors from across the region.
