A Southmead Hospital consultant is the only UK surgeon to be awarded a place on a prestigious fellowship in North America.
Orthopaedic surgeon Jason Webb of the Avon Orthopaedic Centre (AOC), based in the Brunel building, has been awarded one of four places on the Rothman-Ranawat Travelling Fellowship.
The four-week fellowship is offered by The Hip Society and will see Mr Webb visiting major centres in the United States and Canada to learn about the latest surgical procedures, which he can then bring back to benefit his patients in Bristol. It is named after renowned hip surgeons Richard Rothman and Chitranjan Ranawat.
As well as learning about the latest innovations in hip replacements and the care of patients who have undergone the procedures, Mr Webb will be lecturing at each of the centres he visits during the trip.
He was chosen for the honour due to his work on treating hip joint infections.
“I am honoured to have this opportunity,” Mr Webb said.
“I was up against a lot of people in the selection from the UK and was offered this chance because I am based in a good centre at the AOC. I will be going out to promote our centre and what we do and will also be able to bring back the state-of-the-art techniques I learn while I am out there.”
Mr Webb said the travelling fellowship will give him the opportunity to meet the surgeons who have developed new approaches and will be able to show him techniques that could make a difference to hip surgery at Southmead Hospital.
“They are coming up with new approaches all the time in the way they perform surgery but also in terms of post-operative rehabilitation, which can mean that patients do not need to spend so much time in hospital,” he said.
Mr Webb, who is the head of teaching for orthopaedics in the South West, also hopes that the trip will enable him to build relationships with experts in North America.
He will fly out for the fellowship at the end of March, starting in Las Vegas at The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons specialty day.
