A fundraising appeal for the Bristol Breast Care Centre has been boosted by a donation by television presenter Carol Vorderman.

The former Countdown presenter has donated one of her dresses to the £500,000 appeal to help raise funds for the new centre at Southmead Hospital Bristol.

The £500,000 appeal to create a breast care centre for the whole of Bristol is being supported by the city’s fashion week, which starts at The Mall Cribbs Causeway this Wednesday.

Tickets to win Carol Vorderman’s sleeveless charcoal figure-hugging dress will be available for £5 during fashion week to people attending the event. Other prizes in the raffle include designer handbags and hotel stays.

The Bristol Breast Care Centre, which is planned to open in the summer, will bring all breast care services for Bristol, South Gloucestershire and parts of Bath and North East Somerset together under one roof.  Surgeons, radiologists and radiographers will all be based in the centre, run by North Bristol NHS Trust, which will enable patients to have all the tests they need in one visit rather than having to return.

The historic Beaufort House on the Southmead Hospital site is currently being transformed to create the centre, which is being tailored to the needs of patients.

Carol Vorderman said: “Over the years, I’ve worked with North Bristol NHS Trust, and am excited about the wonderful work taking place to make the Bristol Breast Cancer Centre a more tranquil environment for patients facing cancer.

“I know how frightening it can be to be faced with a cancer diagnosis after my mum’s two experiences over the years, and this centre has been designed to try and reduce some of that fear and anxiety.  I'm only too happy to support this appeal.

“While sadly, I cannot make it along to Bristol Fashion Week because of work, I am delighted to be able to help by donating one of my dresses to the cause.  Hope someone likes it!”

Bristol Fashion Week features five days of fashion with 18 catwalk shows hosted by television stylist Mark Heyes and celebrity hairdresser Andrew Barton.

There is still time to buy tickets to Bristol Fashion Week. Donations can be made to the Bristol Breast Cancer Centre Appeal when paying for tickets.

Head of fundraising at North Bristol NHS Trust, Jane Ibbunson, said: “It is great that Bristol Fashion Week is supporting the Bristol Breast Care Centre Appeal and we are delighted that Carol has donated a dress to our raffle. We hope this will significantly improve the amount of money we can raise for this great new facility.”
