WRVS donation will benefit staff, patients and visitors for years to come

Monday, 22 August 2011

A cheque for £460,000 is to be presented to North Bristol NHS Trust on Tuesday, August 23 from the WRVS, marking a 60-year partnership between the two organisations.

WRVS has had a presence at Frenchay for the past 60 years and volunteers will gather at the hospital’s Redwood Restaurant to mark the occasion where a special afternoon tea will be served.

The £460,000 comes from profits made at the WRVS shops and coffee shops at Frenchay and Southmead (where the WRVS has also been in operation for more than half a century) over the last four years.

The shops and coffee shops are run by a total of 141 volunteers across the two sites who give up their time every week to serve patients, visitors and staff.

The donation will be used as follows:

-         £245,622 to significantly improve the quality of care to dementia patients at North Bristol NHS Trust. This will include the purchase of specialist equipment, training, electronic beds and pressure mattresses and pressure relieving cushions

-         £100,000 to the Mum’s the Word appeal which aims to raise £1.5 million to develop the maternity units at Southmead. The £100,000 will specifically be used to create a new family room adjoining the Percy Phillips Ward. This room will also form part of a new coffee shop.

-         £80,000 for patient lifting equipment. This will pay for 30 new patient hoists which will assist patients, improve dignity and protect clinical staff. These will be selected to be compatible with lifting equipment in the new hospital and will move to the new wards in 2014.

-         £34,378 will be given to North Bristol NHS Trust’s charity Shine Together for other projects across the Trust.

Ruth Brunt, Chief Executive of North Bristol NHS Trust, said: “This is a truly phenomenal sum of money and on behalf of everyone at North Bristol NHS Trust I would like to thank the WRVS.

“This will enable us to buy equipment and make changes that will benefit patients, staff and visitors for many years to come.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all the WRVS volunteers who give up their time in our hospitals week after week – you are really appreciated, providing our patients and visitors with an oasis away from the often inevitable stress and worry of coming to hospital. Thank you again.”

Steven Hargreaves, Head of Service – WRVS South West, said: “The WRVS has enjoyed a strong partnership with Frenchay and Southmead hospitals. It is wonderful to be in the position to be able to present the Trust with such a fantastic sum of money.

“Of course, this wouldn’t be possible without our army of tireless volunteers and I would like to thank them for their hard work and dedication over the past 60 years.”
