Volunteer Complementary Therapist Opportunities
Our Macmillan Wellbeing Centre is looking for volunteer complementary therapists to join our team
The Macmillan Wellbeing Centre at Southmead Hospital offers drop in information, advice and support to anyone with a diagnosis of cancer and their families or carers. We want the Centre to be friendly and welcoming, a place that promotes wellbeing that people enjoy coming to; somewhere they feel supported and listened to, where that can relax, as well as get practical, emotional, effective advice, and feel informed and supported.
Complementary Therapies can make a significant difference to the wellbeing of cancer patients and their families and carers’ by reducing stress and anxiety, enabling people to cope better with their illness and pain control, and relieving some of the symptoms and side effects from the Cancer and its treatments.
At the Wellbeing Centre, we offer a range of therapies:
- Indian head massage.
If you are a fully qualified therapist with at least 6 months experience post qualifying, then you could help us provide this service by volunteering with us, and help make a real difference to the lives of those living with and beyond cancer.
How much time should complementary therapy volunteers offer?
We would like to be able to offer complementary therapies on a daily basis, so we need a team of therapists who collectively will help us provide this cover and range of therapies.
The Centre is open to the public 9.30am to 4pm, Monday to Friday, so you would need to be available within these times to volunteer with us. Availability to volunteer a few hours or more each week or fortnight will be required. We ask for a minimum commitment of 6 months, due to the cost of training you in the Adapting therapies to cancer.
Training & support
All our therapists will need to be qualified to an appropriate level and will need to attend the Adapting therapies to treat people with cancer workshop, which we will provide free-of-charge. The next workshop will run on 21 September.
As a volunteer there will be an opportunity to attend Macmillan Volunteer training days and to attend centre based shared complementary therapist training.
We will also offer the opportunity to debrief with the team at the centre, on an individual basis and arrange team get-togethers for mutual support.
