Advances in Stroke care and nursing in an acute specialist service

Stroke care is ever evolving with huge advances in both medicines and procedures for patients. Since 2017, North Bristol NHS Trust has led a specialised acute stroke centre, treating patients from across the West of England, and is currently the third busiest service in the country. The stroke service is forever growing, with new research trials being carried out to improve treatment options for our stroke patients. Thrombolysis and thrombectomy are exciting treatment options which can be offered to many patients at North Bristol NHS Trust. Our talk will provide an insight into the Stroke specialty and our role as a regional centre for the Thrombectomy service.

The role of a Theatre Practitioner in a Major Trauma Centre

This seminar will provide an overview of what it is like to work in a Major Trauma Centre as a Theatre Practitioner. We will explore what a Theatre Practitioner is, the different specialities you can work in and how it might differ to working in other theatre environments. We will also hear from some of the current practitioners about their experiences of working in a Major Trauma Centre.

Comprehensive Geriatric Assessments - What does this look like in practice?

Our trust operates one of the most modern acute hospitals in Europe, providing high quality acute medical care for patients. We're not only a major trauma centre, but a regional specialist centre for a wide range of specialties and a centre of excellence of many disciplines.

With support from King’s College London Quality Improvement and NHS Improvement, our Complex Assessment Liaison Service (CALS) has greatly improved the frailty patient pathway in our trust through our Complex Geriatric Assessment (CGA). Developing our CGA involved research, development, post-graduate study and a team with Advanced Practice masters.

The Purple Butterfly Project

Working in an Emergency Department and Major Trauma Centre

This seminar is an introduction to the trauma network in the UK and how the Emergency Department at North Bristol NHS Trust fits into the Severn Trauma Network. Our Emergency Department prides itself in a multidisciplinary team approach in all we do. For the purpose of this seminar, we focus on what to expect as a nurse working within the trauma team and what our nurses should expect in terms of trauma training within the Emergency Department.
