Epilepsy & Nonepileptic Attack Disorder (NEAD)
Neuropsychiatry at North Bristol NHS Trust, deals with 3 main aspects of epilepsy:
- Complex neuropsychiatric problems related to epilepsy
- Management of intractable epilepsy
- Evaluation of patients undergoing neurosurgical procedures, such as Vagal Nerve Stimulation (VNS) for the treatment of epilepsy. VNS is relatively new technique for treatment of severe intractable epilepsy, especially in people with learning disability.
We also work with people with Non-epileptic Attack Disorder (NEAD).
NEAD episodes mainly manifests as collapses or episodes of unconsciousness, which are frequently mistaken for epilepsy. NEAD can exist alongside or in absence of epilepsy, thus requiring the need for detailed psychological assessment and treatments.
