Bristol Genetics Laboratory (BGL) is committed to providing a service of the highest quality, in conjunction with continual evaluation and quality improvement of all aspects of the laboratory’s service.
The Quality Policy describes the laboratory’s commitment to the Quality Management System, described in the Quality Manual, which also meets the requirements of accreditation standards.
The Bristol Genetics Laboratory has adopted the Quality Policy of North Bristol NHS Trust’s Pathology Sciences which can be found at: https://www.nbt.nhs.uk/severn-pathology/quality/quality-policy
External Quality Assessment
The Laboratory participates in appropriate External Quality Assessment (EQA) Schemes (GenQA/EMQN/UKNEQAS LI/ UKNEQAS Blood Coagulation/EuroMRD). BGL uses EQA scheme providers accredited to ISO17043 where available. Where a scheme is not available, BGL will ensure appropriate alternative proficiency testing arrangements are in place.
Referrals to other laboratories
If it is necessary to refer a sample to another laboratory for testing every effort is made to use an ISO15189:2012 accredited centre.
We strive to fulfil the requirements of all our service users and invite comments to ensure that our service meets the needs of both referrers and patients. Regular user surveys are carried out.
Complaints are taken very seriously and are fully investigated and a written response provided. The laboratory follows the Trust complaints procedure. Find out more information: How to Raise a Concern or a Complaint.
Confidentiality/Protection of Personal Information
The laboratory takes all appropriate measures to ensure the protection of personal information; all staff are required to adhere to Trust clinical governance policies, including confidentiality and information security.
This laboratory follows the recommendations laid down by the Joint Committee on Genomics in Medicine Consent and Confidentiality in Genomic Practice guidelines (3rd edition, July 2019).
The responsibility for informed consent lies with the requesting clinician; the guidelines above include suggested proforma patient consent forms. Hence on sample receipt this laboratory assumes the clinician has obtained valid consent for the processing/storage issues described on the reverse of our request form.
Provision of Clinical Advice
Senior laboratory staff are available during normal working hours to provide clinical advice on appropriate tests, interpretation of reports and follow up testing. For very urgent out of hours advice, senior staff can be contacted via the NBT switchboard.
