North Bristol NHS Trust has a multi-disciplinary POCT Committee which co-ordinates the service. It promotes good practice in POCT. There is a long-standing Trust Clinical Governance Policy, the key points of which are:
- No member of staff is permitted to perform a POCT technique unless they have been trained and assessed as competent in the use of that technique.
- All diagnostic testing should be performed in the laboratory unless this does not meet the clinical need. If the clinical requirement indicates the need for POCT, equipment or techniques must be discussed with and approved by the POCT department prior to acquisition and implementation.
- All testing procedures must be clearly documented and conducted in as safe manner. There must be consideration of the appropriate recording of results.
The POCT department is currently accredited to the Clinical Pathology Accreditation (UK) Ltd Standards for the Medical Laboratory.
