Tell us a bit about you and how you got involved in Diabetes research

I’ve been a diabetic for about 13 years. My hobbies are gardening, caravanning and general maintenance around the house. I found out about the research through a friend of ours who worked in research at NBT. My [blood sugar] count was off the scale – it was 110 and it is now down to about 40.

My name is Ian, I’ve been a diabetic for about 13 years.  My hobbies are gardening and caravanning and just general maintenance around the house. I found out about the research through a friend of ours here, she no longer works here, but I was off the scale, or something like that, I think my count was 110 and it is now down to about 40.

As part of the research, I need to check my sugar levels weekly, or sometimes daily and take a tablet daily as I have done for years. I do not know whether it’s a placebo or the proper thing, but I think it is the proper thing, because I have lost so much weight. I’ve lost about six stone in weight.

The study has helped me so much, with all the weight loss I’ve lost, and it has made me able to work in my garden, do my caravanning.

If anyone is thinking about taking part in a research programme, please do it, because it helps everybody else and it has helped me tremendously.
