About Fresh Arts
Fresh Arts is our arts programme, providing regular art exhibitions and creative activities like knitting, music and dance for patients, staff and visitors at Southmead and Cossham Hospitals.
Fresh Arts is for everyone - patients, staff, carers, families and friends. We use creativity and art to make a positive difference to time spent in hospital.
Visiting the hospital can often involve difficult emotional times for patients, their friends and families. We believe that art can make it less intimidating and provide moments of relief from stress, helping us to feel human in the clinical hospital space.
Fresh Arts uses creativity to connect with patients as people, to recognise each patient for who they are; to share experiences, hopes, fears and dreams.
Better for patients
The arts in healthcare improve patient wellbeing and the working lives of staff by:
- Enriching the hospital environment
- Distracting us from our worries
- Giving us a voice and a way to share our experiences, to start conversations, to express and process complex feelings
- Providing creative experiences to alleviate anxiety, banish boredom or support people psychologically and emotionally
- Improving morale
- Linking the hospital in with our local community
Established in 2007 Fresh Arts is funded by both NHS revenue and Southmead Hospital Charity, the charity which manages donations to the hospitals. Project funding comes from other sources including Southmead League of Friends and the National Lottery’s Awards for All scheme. Find out more about our funders & partners.
As part of the North Bristol NHS Trust team we are active in delivering the Trust’s key values:
- Putting patients first
- Recognising the person
- Working well together
- Striving for excellence
We align the Fresh Arts programme closely to them to ensure we deliver strong outcomes, quality work and value for money.
