Please be aware, it can take 15 minutes to walk the length of the Brunel building Atrium. There is a motorised buggy available which seats six.

Our hospital is extremely busy

Please only attend our emergency department if you have a serious or life-threatening condition, if you are unsure where to go call NHS 111.

If you have a friend or family in our hospital who is ready to be discharged, please speak to the ward to see how you can help them return home as soon as possible.

Southmead Hospital

Visitors are permitted anytime, with a limit of 2 visitors at the bedside at any one time.

Please do not visit a patient in hospital if you feel unwell. This includes symptoms of Covid-19, sickness, diarrhoea, fever, sore throat or flu.

By Bus

Southmead Hospital is served by over 12 bus services which stop either on site outside the main entrance to the Brunel building, or very close by, making it easier than ever to travel to and from Southmead by bus.

Cycling

Cycle parking is provided and detailed in the Southmead Hospital Bristol Site Map. You can plan your route on Homepage - Better By Bike. Spare locks and emergency repair kits are available in the Security Travel and Parking office, Brunel building, Level 1.

Trains

The nearest stations are Bristol Parkway, Filton Abbey Wood and Temple Meads. Each station has bus connections to the hospital. National Rail Enquiries, 03457 484950

By Road

From M4

  • M4 junction 19 take the M32 towards Bristol. Leave the M32 at the first exit, (A4174 signposted Parkway).
  • Turn right at the roundabout.
  • Proceed along the dual carriageway.
  • At Filton Hill round about (junction with A38) go straight across onto B4056 Southmead Road.
  • Go straight across the double mini roundabout. The hospital is 250 yards beyond the roundabout on left.

From M5

  • At junction 17 leave motorway towards Bristol (W). Take fourth available exit off roundabout on to A4018 (Cribbs Causeway).
  • Take second available exit off roundabout onto A4018 (Cribbs Causeway).
  • Take first available exit off roundabout on to A4018.
  • Take second available exit off roundabout on to A4018 (Passage Road).
  • Take third available left on to Greystoke Avenue.
  • Turn right at mini-roundabout on to Doncaster Road.
  • Turn left on to B4056 (Southmead Road). Arrive at BS10 5NB

Parking information Southmead Hospital: Accessible Information 

We want your visit to be as easy and stress-free as possible. Please be aware that public parking at the hospital has limited capacity and can become very busy between 10am and midday.  

We highly recommend allowing extra time for your journey and for parking.

Where you can park at Southmead hospital 

Below is a clear list of all public parking areas, grouped by type to help you find the most suitable option. Please check the site map link here to find each car park: Southmead Hospital Bristol Site Map.

  • ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) Car Parks – Public Use 

These car parks use ANPR technology, so you do not need to display a ticket. Pay before exiting. 
Public ANPR car parks include: Emergency Department car park, Brunel Multi Storey, Central Delivery Suite car park and Gloucester House car park.

  • Pay & Display Car Parks – Public Use 

These car parks require you to pay on entering. Display a ticket if using the machines. Public Pay & Display car parks include: Brecon/ Sherston car park, Dorian way car park and Southmead Way car park.

  • Drop-Off Areas – Public Use 

These are short-stay areas for dropping off or collecting patients. 
Time limits may apply, and drivers should stay with their vehicle. 

Drop-off locations include: A&E Drop-Off, Beaufort House, Brunel Apron (outside of the main hospital entrance), Bristol Surgical Centre and Maternity.

  • Disabled-Specific Parking 

These bays are designated for Blue Badge holders only. Spaces are in all public car parks. 

Blue Badge holders may also use other public car parking bays.

Blue Badge Parking 

Blue Badge holders can currently park free of charge in all public car parks. 

To receive free parking: 

  1. Make sure your Blue Badge is clearly displayed. 
  2. Enter your vehicle registration at the payment machine or follow the instructions shown on the machine. 
  3. If you need help, please ask a parking attendant or contact the Parking Team. 

Accessible routes and lifts are signposted from all Blue Badge parking areas. 

Parking for Maternity Patients 

If you are in established labour at the Mendip Birth Centre or Central Delivery Suite: 

  • You may receive parking support. 
  • Ask your midwife for details. 

If your partner or supporter needs to stay overnight, please speak with ward staff to check if any concessions apply. 

Parking Concessions 

Some visitors may qualify for reduced rate or free parking. This includes: 

  • Frequent outpatient attenders 
  • Parents or guardians of children staying overnight 
  • People receiving regular cancer treatment 
  • Registered volunteers 

If you are not sure whether you qualify, please ask the Parking Team or speak to your clinical team.

Our car parks are monitored by CCTV and patrolled by security officers. If you feel unsafe, cannot find your car, or need urgent help, call or visit the Parking Team.

Card-only payments

The Pharmacy in the Brunel building, Gate 12, Level 1, only accepts card payments for prescription charges and over-the-counter (OTC) medicines.

For those unable to pay by card, the nearby Cashier’s Office can help with handling cash payments.
