The renal ward is at Gate 8b, Level 4, Brunel building, Southmead Hospital, Bristol. The ward has 34 beds, 26 of which are in beds are in single rooms with their own bathroom.

There are facilities for haemodialysis in each room. Not all patients with kidney problems are looked after on the kidney ward – our specialist medical team regularly reviews patients cared for on other wards, and our hospital haemodialysis team provides dialysis for patients on dialysis admitted to other wards.

Feedback

Every member of staff I came across was so kind and caring, nothing was too much trouble.

Renal Outpatients

Renal outpatients

In our outpatients clinics, patients meet members of the expert professional team who care for people with kidney problems. The professionals working here include doctors (consultants, registrars, and other doctors), transplant coordinators, specialist nurses, psychologists, dieticians and education team.

Most of our clinics happen at Gate 5, Level 1, Brunel building, Southmead Hospital, BS10 5NB.

Consultants from the Renal Service visit also several other hospitals to provide kidney clinics. These are held at:

  • Royal United Hospital, Bath, BA1 3NH – Mondays and Thursdays, Diabetes Centre (A19). Please note that access to the clinic is currently through a separate entrance – you can’t get to the clinic area via the main hospital entrance
  • Frome Community Hospital, Enos Way, Frome, BA11 2FH
  • Chippenham Community Hospital, Rowden Hill, Chippenham, Wilts SN15 2AJ
  • Weston Dialysis Unit, Weston General Hospital, Grange Road, Uphill, Weston-Super-Mare BS23 4TQ
  • South Bristol Dialysis Unit, Downton Road, Knowle West, BS4 1WH

Please note: even if your clinic is in another hospital, you will still need to contact the team at Southmead if you need to cancel or reschedule.

While many of our clinics are general kidney clinics treating a range of kidney issues, we also run specialist clinics for the following situations:

Kidney stones clinic (lead consultant Dr Helen Campbell)

We run a clinic for people who have developed kidney stones. This clinic is different to the urology clinics which focus on stone removal or surgery.

The purpose of the clinic is to find out why your kidney stones are forming (often by asking you to collect urine for 24 hours). We then recommend diet changes or medications to try to reduce the formation of kidney stones.

Genetics

This clinic investigates and treats people with inherited kidney diseases. The clinic has close links to the clinical genetics service at University Hospitals Bristol.

Young adult kidney clinic (Lead consultant: Dr Anjali Menon)

Our young adult service provides kidney care to young people who have developed kidney disease as children but are now moving into the adult service.

You will see a kidney specialist from the adult service, often with a paediatric kidney specialist. Specialist nurses also provide support to young adults with kidney disease.

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)

We run many clinics looking after people with permanently-reduced kidney function, known as Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD).

We monitor patients with CKD by doing blood and urine tests. We provide treatment to try to prevent loss of kidney function over time and to reduce the risk of related conditions such as heart attack and stroke. For people nearing the point of kidney failure, we provide information and preparation for transplantation, dialysis or conservative management of kidney failure.

The NHS website has helpful information on CKD.

Options for Kidney Care Clinic

We run an ‘Options for Kidney Care’ clinic in Cossham Hospital, Kingswood, East Bristol.

At this specialist clinic, people who are nearing the point of kidney failure see a kidney specialist consultant, a dietician and an education nurse. The clinic aims to provide education on the treatments of kidney failure such as transplantation, dialysis and conservative management of kidney disease.

Kidney transplant recipient clinic

People with kidney failure who have received a kidney transplant attend this clinic.

We monitor kidney transplant function, recommend medication changes, and give treatments to maintain a kidney transplant and support kidney transplant recipients to stay well.

Vasculitis (lead consultant Dr Saira Risdale)

In our vasculitis clinic we look after people who have developed a type of immune condition called vasculitis, which has affected the kidneys.  Treatment for vasculitis involves medication to suppress the immune system.

Kidney disease in pregnancy (lead consultant Dr Alison Armitage)

A joint clinic with the maternal medicine department at Southmead Hospital, our joint kidney-pregnancy clinic looks after people with kidney disease during pregnancy, helping to reduce the risk of complications.

Lupus (lead consultant Dr Albert Power)

In our lupus clinic we look after people with kidney damage related to the immune condition Lupus (or SLE – Systemic Lupus Erythematosus) Treatment for lupus involves medication to suppress the immune system.

Haemodialysis

Haemodialysis treatment is done in our dialysis units:

  • Southmead Renal Dialysis Unit, Brunel building
  • Cossham Satellite Dialysis Unit
  • Bath Satellite Dialysis Unit
  • Bright Satellite Dialysis Unit
  • South Bristol Satellite Dialysis Unit
  • Frome Satellite Dialysis Unit
  • Weston (Ambleside) Satellite Dialysis Unit

Home dialysis

Many patients receive dialysis treatment in their own home. We offer home treatment with haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. The home treatments are supported by our home dialysis team (or ‘renal community team’)

Visit this page for more information Home Haemodialysis | North Bristol NHS Trust

Renal patient education team

The renal patient education team works with patients to help them understand treatments for kidney failure, including transplantation, dialysis, and conservative management of kidney failure. This can help patients decide on the best treatment for them and prepare for receiving that treatment.

Nuclear Medicine

Regular Off Off

Nuclear Medicine is a medical specialty involving the administration of radioactive pharmaceuticals for the diagnosis of disease processes.

It is best at providing information of system function rather than pictorial anatomical images.

Radiopharmaceuticals (radioactive isotopes bound on to different pharmaceuticals) can be administered in a variety of ways by injection, inhaling or ingesting them.

The most common isotope for Nuclear Medicine imaging is Technetium 99m which has a half- life of 6 hours (this refers to the decay in activity which means that every 6 hours there is half as much as we started with) but we do use isotopes that have slightly longer half lives.

Nuclear Medicine
These tracers accumulate in the organ of interest where they emit gamma rays, these are then detected by equipment called a gamma camera giving us the information we require to help with diagnosis. The gamma camera resembles a CT scanner and is attached to a computer which gives quantitative and imaging data.

The scans we perform are very varied and they can take from a few minutes to hours or scanning over several days.

www.patient.co.uk provides some useful information on what to expect when attending a Nuclear medicine appointment.

Nuclear medicine is a specialist service and is only provided in the Brunel building at Southmead Hospital.

If you have received an appointment or have been referred for a scan you are welcome to contact the department and we will explain your procedure for you.

Please feel free to contact the Imaging Contact Centre if you would like to change your appointment time.

It is very important that you let us know if you cannot keep you appointment as we order the radioactive pharmaceuticals especially for you and they can be very expensive. If you do not then attend the isotope is wasted.

X-Ray

Regular Off Off

X-rays are a type of radiation. They're similar sources of energy to light. However, light has a much lower frequency than X-rays and is absorbed by your skin. X-rays have a higher frequency and pass through the human body.

Having an X-Ray

As X-rays pass through your body, energy particles called photons are absorbed at different rates. This pattern shows up on the X-ray images.

The parts of your body made up of dense material, such as bone, show up as clear white areas on an X-ray image. The softer parts, such as your heart and lungs, show up as darker areas. NHS Choices provides some useful information on what to expect when attending for an X-ray.

The Imaging department provides a number of X-ray services within North Bristol NHS Trust in both the Hospital and Community setting.
