Intravenous Therapy Training

We offer a range of training courses under the topic of intravenous therapy and details on each are available below.

IV Therapy Workshop

Length of course: 7.5 hours

Who is it for? For any Nurse, Midwife or Allied Health Professional, and Trainee Assistant Practitioners undertaking the administration of intravenous drugs or fluids.

Pre-course requirements: The candidate must have passed the calculations test before attending this study day.
The candidate must have identified an assessor (or assessors) and have an agreement with their manager that opportunities will be made available for them to practice this skill, enabling them to become competent.
The candidate should read the Medicine Management Policy and the Injectable Medicines Standard Operating Procedure (internal intranet links).

Aim: By the end of the workshop, participants will have the skills, knowledge and practice to manage the care of a patient receiving IV therapy.

Blood Transfusion Training

Length of course: 1.5 hours

Who is it for? For all clinical staff involved in any aspect of transfusion practice.

Pre-course requirements: No pre-course requirements.

Aim: The aim of the session is to highlight the best practice for blood component transfusion and to enable the healthcare practitioner to safely ensure the right blood is given to the right patients as per Trust policy and national guidelines.

Blood Transfusion Competency Assessment

Length of course: 1.5 hours

Who is it for? For all clinical staff involved in any aspect of transfusion practice.

Pre-course requirements: Must be up-to-date with blood transfusion training.

Aim: The aim of the session is to assess competence for blood component transfusion through discussion, question and answer, and simulation, to safely ensure the right blood is given to the right patient as per Trust policy and national guidelines.

Calculations Masterclass

Length of course: 2 hours, with the option of taking the IV calculations test straight after the session.

Who is it for? For staff preparing for the IV drug calculation test.

Pre-course requirements: To have worked through the North Bristol NHS Trust calculations workbook and to have attempted 'practice paper 1'.

Aim: The aim of the session is to assist individuals in passing the IV calculations test and to facilitate confidence and competence in IV drug administration.

Calculations 1:1

Length of course: Variable dependent on individual need.

Who is it for? For staff preparing for the IV drug calculation test, and who feel they would benefit from 1:1 tuition.

Pre-course requirements: To have worked through the North Bristol NHS Trust calculations workbook and to have attempted 'practice paper 1'.

Aim: The aim of the session is to assist individuals in passing the IV calculations test and to facilitate confidence and competence in IV drug administration.
