Prosthetics

The Prosthetics Service, at Bristol Centre for Enablement, sees patients who have had an amputation or who have been born with a limb deficiency. We assess the suitability of every patient for an artificial limb and then make and fit it within our clinic. We also provide on-going support and advice with any issues related to your amputation or use of the prosthesis.

We cover the areas of Bristol, Gloucestershire, North Somerset and western parts of Wiltshire.

You will normally be referred into our service by your surgeon, GP or other member of your clinical team.

Your Initial Appointment (Primary Assessment)

The aim of your initial appointment is for the team to assess your potential for using an artificial limb. This may take up to 2-3 hours. If the assessment is for a child it is very helpful if both parents/carers attend, fo at least, the first appointment. You will be given lots of information and advice about how your child will be treated and managed over the coming years.

During your appointment please ask any questions you may have.

To help with your assessment please bring with you:

  • A list of medication you are currently taking.
  • Any medication you need to take whilst at the centre.
  • Your wheelchair and its attachments (if applicable).
  • Appropriate shoe.
  • Snacks / change for refreshments.

If your assessment suggests you will benefit from an artificial limb then you will receive a series of futher appointments, at which you will be cast and fitted for your artificial limb by a prosthetist.

Dispensing Services

Regular Off Off

The dispensary service prepares medication for in-patients, some out-patients and patients being discharged from hospital.

Pharmacists provide a check on all medicines, often liaising with the doctor or nurse, to ensure the safe and effective use of medicines.

Prescriptions are checked for their appropriateness in both therapeutic terms and in dose, frequency and duration (especially for antibiotics).

Drug charts for inpatients are amended to increase therapeutic benefit and endorsed with any relevant additional information such as how medicines should best be taken.

We are currently introducing “one-stop” dispensing across the hospital. Patients are encouraged to bring all their medication from home to ensure that there is no break in treatment on admission. These will be stored in a secure bedside locker, to optimise the use of Patients Own Medicines. Medication needed for discharge will be dispensed in advance to improve efficiency.

Only prescriptions from specific out-patient clinics and certain previously agreed prescriptions will be dispensed by the hospital pharmacy department. All others should be dispensed in the community. Prescription tax is applicable for all hospital out-patient prescriptions. Out-patients are normally supplied with 1 month’s medication, unless a specific course states otherwise or if the medicine is unavailable in the community.
