Cossham Hospital passes first CQC inspection

Cossham Hospital has passed all essential standards in its first inspection by the Care Quality Commission since its £19 million refurbishment.

The 106-year-old community hospital in Kingswood reopened last year and now provides the area’s only stand alone midwife-led birth centre, renal dialysis unit, X-ray and scanning department, physiotherapy and outpatient appointments.

Care Quality Commission inspectors found that the hospital was meeting all six standards during its unannounced visit in November. Its findings have been published on the regulator’s website today. The standards are: Respecting and involving people who use services, care and welfare of people who use services, co-operating with other providers, cleanliness and infection control, safety and suitability of premises, and staffing.

They praised the high standards of cleanliness and said patients were positive about the standards of care.

During the inspection the Care Quality Commission spoke with 30 patients and 25 members of staff.

The report said: “The overwhelming response we received both from the new mothers, patients and their families that we spoke with was that they were satisfied with the care treatment and support provided.”

Inspectors added: “We received positive comments from each person about how they were treated. They told us they were involved in making decisions about their care.”

“All staff we spoke with were knowledgeable about the mothers or patients they were looking after and the aims of the care and treatment and support, or diagnostic procedures they were carrying out.”

Inspectors praised the “new, modern and fully accessible facilities in the outpatients departments” noting that this had increased the number of appointments and that local people no longer had to travel to an acute hospital to see their consultant.

Andrea Young, North Bristol NHS Trust chief executive, said: “I am delighted with the success of the new Cossham Hospital, the facilities are outstanding and it’s great to get such positive feedback from patients. I’d like to thank our staff whose efforts have been recognised through this positive assessment.”
