'Southmead in the top 20 hospitals for supporting patient choice and facilitating organ donation'

New figures released by NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) show that Southmead Hospital was among the hospitals where most patients donated their organs after death.

The figures have been released to mark the publication of the annual Organ Donation and Transplantation Activity Report showing that the hospital was one of the top 20 donor hospitals in the UK last year, with 27 patients donating organs to people in need of transplants.

The report shows deceased organ donation in the UK increased by 2% last year as hospitals return to normal activity levels following the pandemic. Despite this, the number of people being listed for a transplant has increased. There are now more than 7,000 people on the active waiting list and a further 3,822 temporarily suspended.

Ian Thomas, Clinical Lead for Organ Donation at Southmead Hospital and UK Lead for Operational Performance in Deceased Organ Donation with NHSBT, said:

“We recognise and acknowledge the selfless act of those 27 patients who became organ donors here at Southmead. I am always humbled by the strength of families and friends who are able to support their loved ones decision to become an organ donor and as an organisation NBT will always ensure that those choices are explored and facilitated.

“It is only with organ donation that organ transplantation can be performed, and we celebrate the fact that 54 individuals have received a life-changing or indeed, life-saving organ transplant as a result of the generosity of our patients.”
