In vascular testing we carry out investigations on people who are suspected of having diseases of the circulation (vascular diseases).
All the tests performed are non-invasive ultrasound tests. By using sound waves the ultrasound machine can form images of the inside of your body and allows measurements of the blood flow. Vascular ultrasound involves creating images of the blood vessels within your body.
Some patients will be referred for a scan which gives a picture on a screen, often called a Duplex Scan.
You also may be referred for a test which involves listening to the blood flow and taking pressure measurements at the ankle and arm, often called a Doppler test.
The results from these tests can help medical professionals confirm a diagnosis and plan your treatment.

Dr Liam Scott has been a Consultant in Intensive Care and Anaesthesia at Southmead Hospital since May 2022. His clinical interests include Neuro-ICU and anaesthesia for Orthopaedics and Trauma. He is the Lead Consultant for Advanced Critical Care Practitioners (ACCPs). He also works as a trackside doctor for the Formula 1 British Grand Prix.
Alongside his clinical work, Dr Scott is a Medical Examiner for hospital and community services across the city, reviewing causes of death, mortality trends, governance concerns and Coroner referrals. He holds a Master’s degree in Medical Law; his research interests focus on the medicolegal issues at the end of life and the legal definition of death. He is a member of the Legal and Ethical Policy Unit of the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine.
Dr Scott has extensive experience as a fixed-wing air ambulance Flight Doctor, transporting patients around the UK and Europe. In August 2021 he was part of the civilian aeromedical evacuation of hundreds of Afghan refugees following the fall of Kabul. In 2025, he was commissioned by international prosecutors to provide expert aeromedical evidence for a United Nations genocide tribunal.
