Southmead Emergency Stroke Services

Southmead Hospital is a specialist centre for acute stroke and can offer thrombolysis (the breakdown of blood clots) and other emergency care.

We would consider thrombolysis if the onset of symptoms is less than 4 ½ hours.

Think FAST; Facial weakness, Arm weakness, Speech problems and Time. We also consider hemianopia (vision loss).

After the emergency phase you will be admitted to the Acute Stroke Unit, where you will continue to have your treatment and sustain a period of observation.

In a life-threatening emergency go to the Emergency Department or call 999.
