Bristol Bariatric Service (BBS)
Bristol Bariatric Service is the second sub-service of the Bristol Weight Management and Bariatric Service (BWMBS) and offers weight loss surgery.
It is national guidance that you must have received intensive intervention from a specialist weight management service, such as WAMS, before being considered for referral on to a Weight Loss Surgery Team.
Weight loss surgery is a new and growing surgical specialty. Weight loss surgery can be an effective tool in patients with severe obesity to help promote long term and sustained weight loss. There are some limitations to the effects of weight loss surgery and therefore it is important for individuals to gain control over their eating behaviours before going forward for surgery.
We have strict criteria as to who is eligible for weight loss surgery.
We offer 3 types of weight loss operation and they are all keyhole (laparoscopic).
The placement of a gastric band is one of the most common operations for weight loss.
The gastric bypass involves the creation of a small pouch at the top of the stomach with staples.
This operation involves removing approximately 80% of the stomach, leaving a thin tube or sleeve.
Most people recover quickly after weight loss surgery & feel ready to resume activities after a few days.
