Being admitted to Intensive Care can be daunting, but we aim to make it as positive an experience as possible.
Patients can be admitted through different pathways. A planned admission might be after a surgical procedure to help us monitor you closely. Other patients may be admitted as an emergency after becoming unwell or injured.
Being looked after on Intensive Care means receiving treatment from a specialist multi-disciplinary team with access to life support machines such as ventilators and dialysis, advanced medications and monitoring. Patients will be looked after either by one nurse who is solely looking after that patient, or sometimes by a nurse who has responsibility for 2 patients at a time.
The medical team does a ward round twice a day led by a consultant. They will check in on your progress at other points of the day too. Our allied healthcare professionals including our physiotherapists, speech and language therapists, dieticians and pharmacists will all be involved in your care. This helps to give you the best possible rehabilitation and recovery from being critically unwell.
If there are parts of your care that we can improve, or you have questions about what has been happening, please let us know. We are all here to help you.
