What is the Kidney Choices Clinic?
The Kidney Choices Clinic is part of the Southmead kidney service. We help people prepare for the possibility of very low kidney function. Our team has access to your kidney records and works with your usual kidney doctor.
Who do we see?
We support people who
- Have a kidney function number (eGFR) below 20.
- Have recently been diagnosed with advanced kidney disease.
- Have started dialysis.
- Have a kidney transplant with low kidney function.
What happens at the clinic?
Each visit lasts about two hours. You will meet a kidney doctor, an education nurse specialist, and a dietitian - usually in that order. We also work with experts in transplant and symptom management, and we can refer you to other specialists if needed. Most people can make a treatment plan after two or three visits.
After each appointment, we will send a letter to you, your GP, and your usual kidney doctor, who will continue to care for you.
How is this clinic different?
We focus on helping you understand and plan for your kidney health. We monitor and treat symptoms, explain available treatments, and help you prepare for the option that suits you best. We guide you on when and why people start dialysis and support you in planning with your doctor.
What should I bring to my appointment?
- Please bring a friend or relative. Kidney failure and its treatments affect those close to you. There will also be lots to remember.
- A list of your medicines.
- Before you come, please complete the symptom questionnaire by visiting this link Kidney Choices Clinic Questionnaire
If you cannot complete the questionnaire online we will give you a paper version when you arrive.
Where is the clinic?
Please come to Cossham hospital - a map is included in your letter.
There is parking on site and nearby. When you enter the main hospital building, turn right through the double doors. A nurse will greet you and do simple tests on your weight and mobility before you see the doctor. These results help us find the best treatment for you.
