Nutrition & Dietetics General Gastroenterology

The Dietitians at North Bristol NHS Trust provide a specialist Outpatients service for the following gastrointestinal conditions:

  • Coeliac Disease
  • Crohn’s Disease, Ulcerative Colitis and Proctitis
  • Irritable bowel syndrome and functional bowel disorders
  • Pancreatitis and pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy
  • Short Bowel Syndrome
  • General Colostomy and ileostomy advice and specialist advice on management of high output stomas
  • Diverticular Disease
  • Liver Disease
  • Gastro-oesophageal reflex
  • Oesophageal Dysmotility
  • Gastroparesis
  • Malabsorption and lactose intolerance
  • Undernutrition and weight loss
  • Gastrointestinal cancers
  • Assessment of nutritional adequacy of patient’s diet

It is very important diagnosis is made by a qualified medical practitioner.  Referrals should be received by letter citing all relevant medical history, current treatment, test results and medications.
The Dietitian plays a role in educating and supporting.  At the Outpatient appointment the Specialist Dietitian will:

  • Assess medical history, investigations, medications and diagnosis
  • Assess weight and weight changes as appropriate
  • Identify and treat possible nutritional deficiencies
  • Review symptoms and offer dietary advice as appropriate to influence these symptoms
  • Provide a link between the patient, their GP and their Consultant
